Treco
Machine & Tool Ltd, Succession
(Retirement) Opportunity
Treco, based in Sacroborough, Ontario, is a high
precision aircraft engine components manufacturer, primarily to Pratt &
Whitney in Montréal. BGA sold Treco a few months ago
to private investors.
Filtran Group (Succession)
BGA together with a local partner sold Filtran Group
(Filtran) of Nepean, Ontario. On June 3, API Electronics Group Inc. (API),
a publicly-held company based in Hauppauge, NY, announced it had completed
its acquisition of the privately-held Filtran. In the US $3-million all
cash deal, API purchased all of the issued and outstanding shares of
Filtran, thereby acquiring its contracts, workforce, real estate and
facilities. Filtran has projected revenues in excess of US $4-million for
its fiscal year, to have ended August 31, 2002.
Comprised of Filtran Inc. of
Ogdensburg, New York; Filtran Ltd. of Nepean, Ontario, Canada; and
Canadian Dataplex Ltd., also of Nepean, Filtran is a leading global
supplier of superior quality electronic components to major producers of
communications equipment, military hardware, computer peripherals, process
control equipment and instrumentation. The company also has manufacturing
capabilities in China and a distribution center in Britain. In business
since 1969, Filtran offers off-the-shelf and custom designed products and
regularly ships components to clients in more than 34 countries.
Hypernetics Limited (Succession)
BGA has sold an Ontario based
aerospace company, Hypernetics Limited to another aerospace
company, Targa Electronics Systems Inc. (Ottawa), following the
preparation of a prospectus and extensive networking.
Hypernetics Limited designs and
manufactures precision, state-of-the-art electromagnetic devices, such as
wheel speed transducers for aircraft braking systems, primarily to
aerospace and military customers.
Sale of Larger Aerospace
Companies
BGA was instrumental (with a Toronto
partner) in selling the businesses of two much larger aerospace/defence
clients, both located in Toronto. These were Donlee Precision and General
Gear, which are recognized as North American
leaders in their high precision manufacturing field. Combined sales were
well over $40 million.
Aircraft Trash Compactor
BGA sold to Weber Aircraft , a
large California based aerospace company, the manufacturing and marketing
rights to the former Godfrey Aerospace’s (Montreal) product line of
aircraft trash compactors.
Aircraft Coffee Maker
BGA sold to Aerolux Limited ,
a U.K. aerospace manufacturer, the manufacturing and marketing rights to
the former Godfrey Aerospace’s product line of aircraft coffee
makers.
Armoured Vehicles
BGA Inc. provided and implemented a
marketing strategy for a Canadian (Montreal based) armoured vehicle
related product, to the European armies and major integrators (eg.
Hagglunds, Ruag, Krauss Maffei, Rhein Metall); the order book now stands
at $800K.
Bombardier Aerospace Robotics
Technologies
BGA Inc. identified new applications,
markets and potential licensees for Bombardier Aerospace, Defence Services
division to commercialize its robotics real-time software
techniques.
Most of the existing industrial
robotics controllers can only deal with the pick and place type of tasks
in which the robot moves in free space, or have a minimal interaction with
the environment. Bombardier's robotics software techniques not only enable
the robot to interact with the passive environment, but also provided
means for interaction with a dynamically changing environment including
other robots. The software techniques provided the robot with core
capabilities for autonomous or partly autonomous operation in performing
tasks which require a dexterity similar to human arms.
Aerospace Industries Association of Canada/Industry
Canada
On behalf of the Aerospace Industries Association of
Canada (AIAC), in February 1997 BGA organized an Aerospace Partnering
Trade Mission to Australia, which coincided with AirShow DownUnder. Also
for the AIAC, BGA assisted in the organization of a similar Trade Mission
to France, in conjunction with the June 1997 Paris Air Show. In February
1999, a second trip to the Australian Air Show was carried out by BGA in
order to gather Australian market intelligence for four distinct BGA
clients.
In 1999, the AIAC and Industry Canada awarded a mandate
to PriceWaterhouseCoopersLybrand, with BGA as an associate, to undertake a
review of Canada's Aerospace Suppliers. The 6 month undertaking evaluated
the current state of the Canadian Suppliers Base and provided
recommendations to address these challenges.
Department of Foreign Affairs &
International Trade
BGA was mandated by the Department of Foreign Affairs
& International Trade to organize and manage the SME (Small &
Medium Enterprises) Program for the 1993 and 1995 Paris Air Shows.
Canadian Space Agency
BGA was awarded by the Canadian Space Agency a second
Standing Offer Agreement (SOA) for Technology Commercialization
(Commercialization Plans, Market Research, and Financial Planning). Two
technology commercialization mandates have already been implemented for a
high tech software (for the marine navigation market) company and a
software firm (in the nuclear business).
Within the same Canadian Space Agency SOA for Technology
Commercialization, BGA recently initiated an advanced robotics technology
transfer research mandate for Bombardier Aerospace.
Association Québécoise de l'Aérospatiale
In mid 1999, BGA completed a mandate for the Association
Québécoise de l'Aérospatiale to provide a study of leading technologies
used by Québec Aerospace SMEs.
Canadian International Development Agency
With respect to Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA), BGA assisted two companies in the preliminary process of
establishing production joint ventures in Indonesia. A second Asian market
which we investigated was China. With two Chinese associates, our group
collectively initiated 5 projects, with CIDA's financial support for
Viability Studies and follow-on Project Implementation.
Canadian Tourism Commission
In 1996, BGA conducted a study of the Japanese Market for
Incentive Travel to Canada, on behalf of the Canadian Tourism Commission.
In 1997 a similar Tourism Study was conducted in Hong Kong. A third study
for the Taiwan market was completed in 1998. |
